Inside Kelcy Warren’s $12 Million Energy Engineering Gift

Universities often receive gifts for buildings or athletics. The $12 million that Kelcy Warren gave the University of Texas at Arlington in 2023 went toward something more specific: a program in resource and energy engineering, often shortened to REE.

UTA said the money would work “to help elevate UTA to the forefront of the growing resource and energy engineering (REE) field.” The amount set a school record, making it the largest single donation in UTA’s history.

The Donor’s Reasoning

Warren built Energy Transfer and remains its Executive Chairman, so he knows the energy workforce from the inside. He explained the gift as a response to demand. “Texas faces a critical need for highly skilled graduates who can manage energy resources, and this innovative REE program will help meet that demand,” he said.

Kelcy Warren earned his own UTA degree in 1978. His history with the campus is detailed in a September 2024 Energy Transfer blog post, which notes that he had already given $4 million across 10 gifts over a period of 25 years.

Earlier Gifts Set the Stage

Those earlier donations covered a range of needs. One established a graduate student fellowship named for Syed Qasim, a former professor and mentor. Others supported Texas Tier One research initiatives, a statewide push to raise the research profile of Texas universities, and the Texas Business Hall of Fame Scholarship.

Warren also has a formal role in university governance. Governor Greg Abbott appointed him to the University of Texas System Board of Regents, with service through 2025.

The energy industry has honored him repeatedly, with recognition from Hart Energy, the Texas Oil & Gas Association, and SMU Cox’s Maguire Energy Institute. That background helps explain why Kelcy Warren chose engineering education as the focus of his largest gift to UTA. Students who come through the REE program will enter the same field that shaped his own career. See related link for more information.
